Isometric protocols are authored by our team of Ph.D. scientists, and set the bar for what suppliers need to measure to demonstrate that carbon dioxide has been removed from the atmosphere and safely stored. In line with the Isometric Standard, all protocols ensure removals are additional, durable, and based on the latest scientific knowledge.Each protocol is modular, ensuring suppliers can choose the capture, feedstocks, LCA, and storage mechanisms that best describe their process while adhering to our uniformly high and conservative standard.
Ocean Alkalinity Enhancement (OAE) enhances the natural capacity of the ocean to absorb and store carbon. The process works by adding alkaline materials to seawater, which acts to raise pH and shift the surface ocean’s carbonate buffer system to consist of proportionally more bicarbonate and carbonate ions and less dissolved aqueous carbon dioxide. This change prompts drawdown of atmospheric carbon dioxide into the surface ocean, lowering the concentration of atmospheric carbon dioxide.
